Engaging Scholars to Rise & Shine

Since its inception in 1996, Rise & Shine has become an integral part of the Rosenwald community in Transylvania County. The academic supports and tutoring provided by Rise & Shine have become even more critical during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thanks to their volunteer tutors’ continued support and a 2020 IMPACT Grant from WNC Bridge Foundation, Rise & Shine continues to offer a year-round, after-school program for school-age children (1st-12th). The program prepares and encourages students who are economically disadvantaged and represent racial minorities to excel in an academic environment and in life.

Rise & Shine offers a safe learning environment with one-on-one tutoring, STEAM enrichment, and ecological stewardship. Scholars attend the after-school program at no charge.

Looking ahead to the 2021-22 academic school year, Rise & Shine is excited to become a Freedom School sponsor once again. The CDF Freedom Schools® program provides summer and after-school enrichment through a research-based and multicultural program model that supports K-12 scholars and their families through five essential components:

  • High quality academic and character-building enrichment
  • Parent and family involvement
  • Civic engagement and social action
  • Intergenerational servant leadership development
  • Nutrition, health, and mental health

“I get A’s and B’s because of R&S! This is a great learning program, and I think a lot more kids should come here.”
